AMMC: the New Stage of Copper Production

06 February 2026, 8:48 932

In today's global economy, copper's importance is no less important than that of gold or oil. Electricity transmission, electric vehicle production, development of green energy – solar panels and wind farms – as well as the most advanced digital technologies are impossible without copper. All of this clearly demonstrates its status as a strategically important raw material.

Amid the rapid development of the industry and technology worldwide, the demand for copper is steadily growing. Uzbekistan occupies a special place in this global chain. The country's mineral resource base, particularly its copper reserves, possesses colossal potential.

To fully exploit this potential, increase the country's export potential, and create a new driver for the copper industry's development, Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex has launched another large-scale project – the construction of the new metallurgical complex. It is noteworthy that the construction of this complex was specifically outlined in the Address of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Oliy Majlis and the Nation on 26 December 2025.

According to experts, the new complex will include the following units: metallurgical and sulfuric acid shops, copper electrolysis shop, oxygen station, slag enrichment plant, concentrate storage facility, charge preparation and water supply areas, and modern wastewater treatment facilities. Design work for the construction of all of these facilities is currently underway.

In particular, the $2.5 billion agreement was signed between AMMC and the German bank KfW IPEX-Bank GmbH to finance the construction of the complex's facilities. The significant amount of work has already been completed on the project. For example, the basic engineering documentation for the complex has been fully developed in collaboration with Metso (Finland, Germany), and international legal and engineering consultants, including experts from DENTONS, have been engaged in the construction process.

The construction of the copper electrolysis shop has been awarded to the German company Engineering Dobersek, while the oxygen station and slag enrichment plant will be built by the Chinese companies Hangzhou Fortune Gas and China Nerin Engineering.

In addition, negotiations are currently underway with international contractors to select the most optimal technical and commercial proposals for the construction of charge preparation warehouses and water supply systems.

As a result of this strategic project, the plant's copper production capacity will increase from the current 148,500 tons to 300,000 tons per year. More than 1,000 new jobs will be created.

The particular significance of this megaproject is also due to the steady rise in copper, gold and silver prices in the global market in recent years. This trend is linked to global technological transformation, the transition to green energy, increased geopolitical risks and growing demand for strategic raw materials. Under these conditions, investment projects implemented at Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex are acquiring strategic significance not only for the enterprise, but also for the economy of Uzbekistan as a whole.
