What is the difference between the concepts of corruption and bribery?

23 December 2025, 9:36 1209

Most people consider these two concepts to be identical.

In reality, although they are interconnected, they differ significantly in content and essence.

It should be noted that bribery is only one form of corruption.

Obtaining any privilege by illegally giving money, gifts, or benefits to an official is considered bribery.

This is just one of the most obvious and familiar manifestations of corruption.

For example: A student gives cash to their teacher to pass the exam successfully (get good grades), or transfers a certain amount of money to the teacher's bank card, or does grocery shopping for the teacher.

However, corruption is a much broader concept.

Thus, obtaining any personal benefit in an illegal manner through abuse of official position or authority is considered corruption.

As an example, we consider it appropriate to highlight the following most common types of corruption:

- Embezzlement (misappropriation of state (budget and public) funds);

- Granting of illegal benefits (preferences) or permits (licenses);

- Intentional making of wrong decisions;

- Nepotism (favoritism based on kinship or clan relations);

- Manipulations in tenders and public procurement are considered the most widespread forms of corruption.
