Sustainable Development and Environmental Responsibility – Strategic Priorities

12 January 2026, 8:51 647

The Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex is consistently implementing a strategy aimed at environmental protection and improving of production efficiency.

The next stage of this work involves the technological modernization of the copper smeltery (CSP), the final link in the Complex’s process chain. The ongoing transformation not only provides tangible economic benefits but also significantly contributes to improving the environmental sustainability of production.

Specifically, a major overhaul of Converter Unit No. 1 was completed in the converter-anode section of the CSP metallurgical shop. Specialists from the smeltery, the specialized repair department, and the Almalyk Specialized Assembly and Repair Department were involved in the project. During the overhaul, the unit’s refractory lining was completely renewed, and a comprehensive technical inspection and restoration of the mechanical and power equipment was conducted.

A key environmental element of the reconstruction was the improvement of the process gas heat recovery system. During the modernization, the number of dust chambers was optimized from four to three, and the smoke removal system was adjusted to a more efficient operating scheme. As a result, the process gas temperature increased from 160°C to 230°C, ensuring stable and uniform operation of the electrostatic precipitators and increasing the efficiency of gas collection and subsequent processing in the sulfuric acid production.

Concurrently, modifications were made to the converter unit’s air supply system: the number of tuyeres was increased from 40 to 46. This reduced the copper matte converting process time by 10-15% and increased the unit’s production capacity by 10%. These measures contributed to an increase in blister copper production volumes and simultaneously ensured a significant reduction in fuel and energy consumption.

As part of the national “Yashil Makon” (“Green Land”) project, landscaping work is ongoing at the Copper Smeling Plant and adjacent areas. Trees and shrubs are planted and systematically managed for irrigation, maintenance, and protection, with plant employees assigned to each site.

Thus, the comprehensive and consistent measures being implemented at the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex form a solid foundation for the development of metallurgical production, taking into account modern environmental requirements. In 2026, these reforms will become an important part of Uzbekistan’s strategy for transitioning to a “green economy” and will contribute to the development of an environmentally friendly and high-tech metallurgical industry.

For reference: following the results of 2025, the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex received international recognition, receiving a Level 3 ESG rating from Sustainable Fitch with a score of 56, confirming the Complex systematic approach to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
