Eco Expo 2025: a Step to Green Production

24 June 2025, 15:51 879

From June 19 to 21, 2025, Tashkent hosted one of the largest environmental exhibitions in the region, Eco Expo Central Asia 2025, bringing together more than 100 participants: manufacturers, researchers, and representatives of government agencies from various countries.

This authoritative event has become an important international platform for discussing environmental protection, sustainable development, and the promotion of green technologies. Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex (AMMC) took an active part in the exhibition, presenting environmental reforms implemented at the enterprise, video materials, and innovative technical solutions.

As part of the exposition, AMMC demonstrated a number of significant achievements:

  • The Copper Processing Plant has undergone a complete reconstruction of 24 aspiration units, which were replaced with 4 centralized, more efficient systems.
  • In the sulfuric acid shop, a system for automatic analysis of dust and gases emitted into the atmosphere was introduced, with data integration into a single digital database.
  • In the roasting department of the Waelz shop of the Zinc Plant, aspiration systems were modernized, increasing the efficiency of air purification from 45-50% to 99.5%.
  • In the filtration and drying department, two modern press-filtration units were installed, thanks to which it was possible to reduce the emission of harmful dust into the atmosphere by 305 kg per day.
  • In the leaching and oxide processing departments, aspiration systems (T-1, T-2, T-3) were completely updated, achieving filtration efficiency of up to 99.5%.

Results on waste reduction and the introduction of waste-free technologies are also presented:

  • 106 thousand tons of copper clinker were processed.
  • 680 thousand tons of slag formed during copper smelting were reused, from which 45,373 tons of iron were extracted and sent for processing to cement plants.
  • 50,519 tons of dolomite powder were transferred to contractors, due to which the volume of the man-made landfill was reduced by 50%.

Measures have been taken to rationally use water resources – closed water supply pumps have been hermetically repaired, new main pipelines have been laid.

Pilot equipment for wastewater treatment has been installed at the Kochbulak deposit together with the Finnish company EPSI OY.

In the field of energy saving:

  • 850 MW Solar panels have been installed.
  • A project has been developed to convert official vehicles to electric and hybrid vehicles; 20 electric vehicles have been purchased in test mode.

For preserving the biodiversity:

  • 300 hectares of non-irrigated lands have been developed, and 1.9 million poplar and ornamental tree seedlings have been planted.

In February 2025, the Sustainable Fitch agency conducted an external ESG audit, according to the results of which the activities of AMMC were highly rated. The plant has implemented international standards:

  • ISO 50001 (energy efficiency),
  • ISO 14001 (environmental management),
  • ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety),
  • ISO 37001 (risk management).

The new smelting units MOF-3, MOF-4 and MOF-5 are implementing advanced Flash Smelting and Flash Converting technologies. As a result, the old reverberatory furnace will be decommissioned, and gas emissions will be sent for processing.

In sulfuric acid shop No. 5, it is planned to produce 1.8 million tons of sulfuric acid annually, while sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions into the atmosphere will be reduced to 0.03%.

The main goal of AMMC's participation in the exhibition was not only to present the environmental reforms being implemented, but also to establish partnerships in the field of green technologies and renewable energy sources, exchange international experience and strengthen the image of a socially and environmentally responsible enterprise.

Results of the exhibition:

  • Preliminary agreements have been reached with a number of companies: with GreenTech Solutions (Kazakhstan) — on industrial waste processing; with EcoEnergy Systems (Germany) — on the implementation of energy-saving technologies; with UZHydromet — on the modernization of environmental monitoring systems.
  • Prospects for cooperation in the field of environmental technologies with companies from Japan and South Korea were discussed.

Participation in Eco Expo Central Asia 2025 was a clear confirmation of AMMC's commitment to the principles of sustainable development. Established international connections, exchange of experience and concluded agreements lay a solid foundation for future "green" projects.

In particular, agreements in such areas as renewable energy, waste recycling, environmental monitoring and production optimization will significantly accelerate the processes of environmental transformation of the enterprise. This will strengthen AMMC's status as one of the leading environmentally responsible industrial enterprises not only in Uzbekistan, but also in the region as a whole.

The AMMC's management is developing strategic plans for regular participation in such international events, active implementation of advanced solutions and full inclusion of environmental sustainability principles in the company's production policy.

D.Abdurakhmanov,

Head of the Environment Protection Department
